2. The Goal of the Game
The objective of American Mahjong is to be the first player to complete a valid hand from the current year’s official score card.
A valid hand typically consists of 14 tiles (including your final drawn tile), made up of specific tactical combinations like pungs (3 of a kind), kongs (4 of a kind), and pairs. Every player must carefully align their strategy with the officially recognized annual pattern card to achieve victory.
3. How the Game Flows

Before play begins, players exchange unwanted tiles in three tactical rounds to refine their starting hands. This rotating swap is the signature characteristic of American Mahjong.
• Turn Order & Discards
Play proceeds clockwise. On each turn, you draw one tile from the tile wall, and then discard one unwanted tile face-up into the center of the table while calling out its name.
• Claiming Discards
You may claim a freshly discarded tile to complete a pung, kong, or pair. If multiple players claim the exact same tile, the player who needs it to declare a win (“Going Mahjong”) receives absolute priority.
• Going Mahjong
When you complete your 14-tile official pattern using either a drawn or a claimed discard, call out “Mahjong!” to win the round and conclude the game.
